Bansko is the Bulgarian door to the world class Alpine ski sport "/Marc Girardelli - world champion/". In year 2009 Bansko entered the world history of ski sport as a host of 3 starts from the Women World Ski Cup!
Bansko was preferred before the famous host of elite races the Italian resort Tarvizio . The Sport Events Program for the coming winter season - 2010 schedules European Cup for men and in 2012 - round of World Cup for women.
Good conditions for ski and tourism attract more and more interest in the resort. Over the past 3 years, Bansko hosted the European winter biathlon championship, extreme skiing and snowboard , European Cup for women's skiing - giant slalom, ski mountaineering, cycling competitions and many others. Nature and History.
Surrounded by mountains Pirin, Rila and Rhodopes, Bansko is a resort with a warm summer and long mild winter. The average temperature during the coldest month January is 1.9C. Snow provides a permanent winter snow thickness up to 2 m. The resort, huddled among the three majestic mountains provide interesting opportunities for summer tourism. The area boasts several mineral resorts and plenty of opportunities for entertainment, including new facilities for golf, tennis and horse riding.
Bansko was built at the place of village, inhabited by different cultures - Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Slavs. They have left traces in the remains of ancient castles, medieval burials and grave mounds. Bansko is legendary city of great Bulgarian patriots, poets and artists dedicated to the idea of preserving the Bulgarian traditions. The old town has the status of protected cultural heritage by UNESCO. Walk along cobblestone paved streets reveals a beauty, untouched by ages. The town keeps its charm, long history and Renaissance spirit . The old houses like fortresses with high gates thick walls and loopholes wear sense of mystery and antiquity. The earliest buildings are protected by domestic covert and loopholes. The houses are painted with multicolored paintings, the ceilings are decorated with beautiful hand carving.
